Top 10 Metal Albums of 2016

2016 came and went in the blink of an eye - and with it came a flash flood of brutal music. The metal genre saw a ton of incredible releases , no matter what style of metal you're a fan of. We here at Soulless figured what's a better way to start off the new year and our new site than a list of our top deathcore, death metal, and slam albums of the past year! Let's dig in, shall we?!

10. NAILS - YOU WILL NEVER BE ONE OF US.

Nails is one band you can always guarantee will be heavy, in your face, and invoke the most violent of tendencies from the listener. And their June release of You Will Never Be One Of Us certainly doesn't lead us astray. From beginning to end, the album only actually runs for a brief 22 minutes, but in such a short amount of time, it is a constant blast of hardcore riffage and intense vocals that will send your fists searching for someone or something to hit. Favorite tracks off this album are "Life is a Death Sentence," "Violence is Forever," and the title track "You Will Never Be One of Us."

09. DESPISED ICON - BEAST

Despised Icon are what I call the grandfathers of the deathcore genre. Their past four releases - without a doubt - shaped the genre and inspired legions of bands to help define the sound. Beast has only been out since July, but I feel like it's going to be yet another album by DI that will help other bands explore new intense writing. The album is a pretty wild ride and utilizes all the great things about Despised Icon, including their iconic (no pun intended!) dual vocals. Favorites off this include "Inner Demons," "Grind Forever," and "Beast."

08. OSIAH - TERROR FIRMA

Osiah are a deathcore band from the UK that are very quickly becoming a household name in the scene. Their release Terror Firma is ther first full length album through Siege Music, and boy, is it a hefty one. The guitars are Earth shattering and the vocals intensify the brutality ten fold. The breakdowns are heavy and completely satisfy your cravings. Excellent album by a band I can't wait to see live. Favorites include "L4D," "Plague World," and "Dethronement of Gods." Don't sleep on this record.

07. SLAUGHTER TO PREVAIL - CHAPTERS OF MISERY

Now before anyone says it - sure this one may be cheating a little bit. Technically "Chapters of Misery" came our in 2015, but it wasn't until last year that it was released by a label - and it was released by Sumerian no less. So fuck it, it's making the list - cause it's that fucking good. The Russian Hate Crew dudes reissued their 7-track beast of an album and managed to secure a spot on 2016's Summer Slaughter festival to support it. It is fantastically heavy and a necessary addition to this list. Anyone unfamiliar should listen to "Hell," "Misery," and "Crowned & Conquered," featuring Lucas Mann of Rings of Saturn. Seriously can't wait for more from these guys.

06. ABORTED - RETROGORE

Aborted - the good ol' boys from Belgium - are back with "Retrogore," their ninth album of death metal goodness. You can always count on an Aborted album for some fun brutality, and Retrogore does not disappoint. Everything from the crushing guitar tones to the intense drums and gritty vocals and the perfectly included samples make Retrogore one of the top albums of this past year. Check out "Whoremageddon," and my personal favorite "Bit by Bit" for a taste.

05. I DECLARE WAR - SONGS FOR THE SICK

I Declare War has gone through some shit over the past couple of years, but one thing has remained the same: they still deliver crushing blows, track by track, on every album they release. Songs for the Sick is a 10 song killer that vocalist Jamie Hanks just slaughters with his voice - and I mean that in a good way! I couldn't wait to get my hands on this album, and for good reason! Those reasons being "We Wait," "Flower Child," and "Tick."

04. VULVODYNIA - PSYCHOSADISTIC DESIGN

Everybody's favorite South African slam band is back for more - rumor has it Vulvodynia's "Psychosadistic Design" will leave you with whiplash and broken bones if you attempt to listen to it from beginning to end! It is a mind melting deliverance of pure slam goodness all wrapped up in one 14 track package. Listen to "Bestial Insemination," "Flesh Tailor" and "Drowned In Vomit" for starters.

03. INFANT ANNIHILATOR - THE ELYSIAN GRANDEVAL GALERIARCH

If you are unfamiliar with Infant Annihilator, I don't know where you have been the past few years. Known for their pretty fucked up lyrics, ear piercing vocals and absolutely insane breakdowns, Infant Annihilator have captured our hearts yet again with what they refer to as "EGG." Honestly, words can't even begin to touch how insane this album is... try listening to "Unholy Gravebirth," "Motherless Miscarriage," and "Soil the Stillborn." Just... wow.

02. WITHIN DESTRUCTION - VOID

Any fans of slam metal know the name: Within Destruction. Hailing from Slovenia, "Void" is their first full length release and it leaves you literally, physically yearning for more. It definitely earns its spot among the top of the list. It is a refreshing mix of deathcore brutality and crushing slam. They are quickly making themselves known with tracks like "Rebirth of an Inverted World," "An Unforeseeable Anomaly," which features Adam Warren from Oceano, and "Plague of Immorality," which features Dean Lamb of Archspire.

01. CARNIFEX - SLOW DEATH

And topping our list of albums of 2016 - a band that needs no introduction to the metal community: CARNIFEX. "Slow Death" literally redefines deathcore by adding a black metal inspired tone to the deathcore sound. I don't know how they do it, but Carnifex seriously manages to one-up their albums with each release. Slow Death has everything you want from a metal album, and that's why it has rightfully earned its spot as the #1 release of 2016. I was lucky enough to catch Carnifex play a few of these songs live and they just fucking kill it. if you somehow have not yet heard this album yet, start off with "Drown Me In Blood," "Slow Death," and "Countess of the Crescent Moon." I fucking love it all.
