Notorious Death Row Last Meals
In the United States, it has become custom that an inmate who is sentenced to the death penalty receives a last meal - a final selection of food to enjoy usually a day or two before the inmate's "big day." The restrictions for "special meals" for the death row inmates vary from state to state, for example, in Florida the meal cannot exceed $40, while in Oklahoma it is limited to just $15. Fun fact: in Louisiana, the prison warden traditionally joins the inmate for their last meal, which must be a pretty interesting scene and conversation, for sure.
I got curious about what some of the more famous death row inmates ordered for their final meals. Sure enough, some of the final meals for some pretty popular names were well documented. Check out what some of our favorite killers and criminals ordered for their last meals!
Ted Bundy, the notorious serial killer who was executed in 1989 via electrocution declined ordering his own special meal, so he was provided with a medium-rare steak, eggs, hash browns, milk, toast, coffee, juice, butter, and jelly. Interestingly enough, Bundy did not eat his final meal.
John Wayne Gacy was executed in 1994 via lethal injection for rape and 33 counts of murder. Gacy ordered a bucket of KFC chicken, 12 fried shrimp, french fries and a pound of strawberries (another fun side note, Gacy managed three KFC locations prior to his conviction).
Stephen Anderson was put to death in 2002 via lethal injection for seven counts of murder, assault, burglary, and even escaping prison! He ordered up two grilled cheese sandwiches, a pint of cottage cheese, a hominy/corn mixture, radishes, peach pie, and chocolate chip ice cream for dessert.
Hastings Arthur Wise was a mass murderer who killed four of his former co-coworkers. He was executed via lethal injection in 2005 after his last meal of lobster tail, french fries, coleslaw, banana pudding and milk.
Gary Carl Simmons had a last meal fit for a king... and his family! Simmons killed and dismembered his victim before scattering the body parts in an alligator infested bayou back in 1996. His final meal tallied up at almost 29,000 calories, although it is reported that he only consumed about half of it. His meal consisted of: "one Pizza Hut medium Super Supreme Deep Dish pizza with double portions of mushrooms, onions, jalapeño peppers, and pepperoni, a second pizza with three cheeses, olives, bell pepper, tomato, garlic, and Italian sausage, 10 8-oz. packs of Parmesan cheese, 10 8-oz. packs of ranch dressing, one family size bag of Doritos nacho cheese flavor, 8 oz. jalapeño nacho cheese, 4 oz. sliced jalapeños, 2 large strawberry shakes, two 20-oz. cherry Cokes, one super-size order of McDonald's fries with extra ketchup and mayonnaise, and two pints of strawberry ice cream" (as per Wikipedia). Holy hell.
One of my personal favorites is Victor Feguer, who was hanged in 1963 for kidnapping and murder. What makes his last meal so unique is that, in contrast to Gary Carl Simmons massive meal, Feguer only ordered a single olive with the pit still intact. He had hoped that after his death, an olive tree would bloom from inside of his body. That's pretty fucking metal if you ask me.
Ronnie Lee Gardner is another fun one - he was executed only seven years ago via firing squad in Utah. His final meal was lobster tail, steak, apple pie, vanilla ice cream and 7-UP. It's not his final meal, however, that is so fascinating - it's what followed: Gardner spent the following 48 hours fasting while on a marathon of "The Lord of the Rings" movies.
And finally, Troy Davis, who was executed in 2011 via lethal injection for aggravated murder - he declined a special meal, saying that "this meal will not be my last." Creepy.
